The family motto is adapted from a quote from Hippocrates, but was a beloved saying of family friend Bill New. The first two lines roughy mean, Life is brief … One’s life work is forever. Clark historians continue to debate the origin of the last line — wine is yummy; however, we all agree on its sage wisdom.
Music notes: The notes are the opening notes from Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”
The dog: Our family’s love of large and fluffy canine companions
The trout and fly: The family’s pastime of wetting a line on mountain streams.
The Hearts: Love and hospitality
The circle of people: Togetherness, family, and the friends who are family
The leaf: Love for our planet, creating a sustainable future, and a dedication to environmentalism.
The Sewing needle: Charlotte’s love of crafting
Wine: While the wine may seem self-explanatory, however the discerning eye will see the “O” labels. Our favorite red wines all have a hard “O” sound as a prominent feature: Rioja, Brunello, Barolo, Nobile de Montepulciano, and more. We dispute in the family whether “C” wines are equally deserving of such an honor (for example, Chianti and, of course, Chardonnay).
The two swallows: In reference to one of our family’s most beloved movies (Monty Python and the Holy Grail), “It is a simple matter of weight ratios, a 5 ounce bird, cannot carry a 1 pound [family crest] …. what if 2 swallows carried it together?!”
