We acknowledge the need for some largess on our end-of-year update this year! Our hope is that our tardiness can bring a surprising bit of brightness to a relatively dull time of year.
All is well on the Clark/Frange front! Char is beginning her last full-time faculty semester, and looks forward to becoming what academics call “emeriti” at the end of June.* Which professional activities will be retained or not is still to be seen! Summer 2022 brought a welcome return to travel, including a trip to Scotland with good friends; Char found wonderful wool for knitting and other crafting projects. Family came our way for Thanksgiving, and we went to Boston for Christmas. We also spent a fun, cold, week in Iceland with friends over New Years.
Jeff continues in pursuit of his primary annual goal — maximum number of days on the water, chasing trout. He reckons that 2022 was a strong year, with efforts totaling 50-55 days. He continues to support a number of emerging entrepreneurial companies, local venture funds, and not-for-profits. He had a “mechanical tune-up” in mid-January with a total knee replacement to better enable trout-chasing. We are very excited that Jeff’s sister, Victoria, is the lead in a new Broadway musical, Kimberly Akimbo. Go see it if you can; she and the show are amazing!
Tory, Adam, and Isla are thriving. They moved to Boston (Arlington specifically) in the summer for Adam to start a nursing program at Boston College. His first “stop” is an RN degree, and he can continue towards a Nurse Practitioner and a Doctorate in Nursing Practice if he chooses. Tory was able to retain her work with E3 (they have a Boston office), and earned a promotion to partner effective 2023.
Banks began a 2-year Masters Program in Social Work at NYU this fall. In highly exciting news, Banks and the wonderful Jackie Patmore became engaged at Thanksgiving (on the red bridge in the Duke Gardens!), and are planning a fall 2023 wedding!
Jackie is towards the end of a doctoral degree in clinical psychology at Columbia, and hails from the Chicago area. She is also a founder of the professional coaching company Arete. We have been able to spend a lot of time with Jackie, and with her family, who we have come to love already. Her mother Margarita loves to craft, and her father Martin loves to flyfish!
Given Charlotte’s parents many trips to, and strong connection with, the country of Ukraine, we want to extend support and sympathy for the Ukrainian people. Char is proud that, in 2022, with sisters, Cathy and Beth, we finally published a book co-edited by our Dad, Jack Reeves, and a Ukrainian colleague of his, Tatiana Kramchaninova-Serebrovska. Entitled Living Through Soviet Times, it is a true story, told through the memoirs of Victor
Kramchaninova and his family, which comprise a 20th Century Ukrainian odyssey that spans both World Wars, the rise and fall of Stalin and the Iron Curtain, and the failed experiment of Soviet Communism. Through the Century, Viktor begins as a staunch Stalin supporter, but comes to realize he was betrayed by Stalin and the Communist Party. How sad that today another generation of Russian citizens is again betrayed by their leader! However, the book is a timely and interesting read, and can be purchased online or ordered at your favorite local bookstore.
We send warm thoughts for all in 2023!
Charlotte and Jeff
*Emeritus or emerita is an honorary title for professors who want to stay active in scholarship following retirement. However, a colleague said that the real definition of faculty emeriti is “forgotten but not gone.”
